Sweet Tooth

I am not that much of a sweets eater but when I do have some I eat them In bulk. I grew up eating a lot of the vintage style candies such as fizzies, zotz, wax teeth, dots, chick0-O-stick and much more. I always find it refreshing when I find a candy shop that carries old style candy. I always end up spending an arm and a leg and walk out with bags and bags of candy. Because I don’t eat it all the time, I usually always have a nice stash. I ran across a few websites that have some retro candy. These are the products that I remember from my child hood, maybe you will remember some of these when you were young as well:

An old-time favorite from Ferrara Pan! Peanuts covered in a delicious candy shell. 0.85-ounce box.

Original Boston Baked Beans

Original Boston Baked Beans are sugar-coated peanut candies. Since their inception, the term “Boston baked beans” has become a colloquial term used in the candy industry to describe any sugar-coated peanut candy product.

The serving size of Original Boston Baked Beans is 11 pieces or 15 g. One serving contains 70 calories (290 kilojoules) and 20 calories (80 kJ) from fat.

These old-fashioned little jawbreakers are RED HOT!
A package of large, individually wrapped Atomic Fireballs, which have been around since 1954.

Atomic Fireballs are a round, cinnamon-flavored hard candy invented by Nello Ferrara in 1954. They are a form of jawbreaker. The outer layers of the candy are a bright red color while the interior layers are white.

When initially introduced by Ferrara Pan, the company had a manufacturing capacity of 200 cases per day but demand quickly rose to 50,000 cases per day. According to the company, approximately 15 million Fireballs are eaten weekly.”The spicy flavor and the exceptionally long lasting candy was instantly popular (coupled with the popular culture obsession with all things atomic at the time). The outside layer of the Fireball is quite mild. After a moment in the mouth, the smooth ball of hard candy releases an intense spicy cinnamon flavor.

They are made with the hot panned process with ingredients of a single grain of sugar, syrup and flavor. The hot pans tumble the ingredients around until the fireballs snowball into the appropriate size. The process lasts for about two weeks. By the end of the process the fireball consists of at least one hundred layers. The fireballs come in two sizes, a pea size and the more popular full-size (7/8ths of an inch in diameter) which comes individually wrapped.

Also available are chewy fireballs, with the same flavor of the original with a chewy texture.

It’s back after a long wait… Beeman’s Gum, a favorite since the 1800s. Order individually or order by the box and save $4 off our regular price.

Beemans gum (originally Beeman’s Gum, see image at right) is a chewing gum invented by Ohio physician Dr. Edward E. Beeman in the late 19th century. Beeman originally marketed the gum, which is made of pepsin powder and chicle, as an aid to digestion. It became a part of the American Chicle Company in 1898, and continued on after the purchase of American Chicle by Warner-Lambert in 1962. Production ceased in 1978 due to lagging sales. In 1985, as part of a nostalgia campaign, it was brought back to the market along with Clove and Black Jack chewing gums.

The original wrapper had a pig logo, but was later replaced with a logo featuring the Beeman’s name in scroll and a picture of Dr. Beeman. The current wrapper design has a white and red background with white and black lettering. Beemans is sporadically produced by Cadbury Adams as a nostalgia gum, along with the other historic gums Clove and Black Jack .

The gum was prominently featured in the movies The Right Stuff, Hot Shots!, and The Rocketeer. It was considered to be the lucky gum of pilots.

This is a crunchy peanut butter and toasted coconut candy.

The Chick-O-Stick is a candy product produced by Atkinson Candy Company, having been manufactured since the Great Depression. It is made primarily from peanut butter, granulated sugar, corn syrup, and toasted coconut, with colorings and preservatives added, and contains no trans fats. There is also a sugar-free version of the candy.

In appearance, the Chick-O-Stick is an orange stick of varying length and thickness, dusted with ground coconut. The interior of the stick is honeycombed with peanut butter and the orange hardened syrup/sugar mixture that also forms the shell. When eaten fresh, the candy is dry and brittle, and biting into a stick can cause the bitten-off end of the stick to crumble messily. If left uneaten, the candy has a tendency to draw dampness and become hard and chewy. The Chick-O-Stick is available in .36 ounce, .70 ounce, 1.0 ounce, and 2.0 ounce sizes, as well as bags of individually-wrapped bite-sized pieces.

The Chick-O-Stick’s original wrapper design featured a stylized cartoon of a chicken, wearing a cowboy hat and a badge in the shape of the Atkinson logo. The chicken is absent from the more recent wrapper design; some commentators have indicated that it contributed to confusion over whether the Chick-O-Stick was candy or a chicken-flavored cracker. The Atkinson Candy Company’s website/on-line store states that the company’s founder “came up with the name one day, and well, it just stuck.” The company had once written in correspondence that they felt the Chick-O-Stick “resembled fried chicken” and that contributed to the name.

It’s back after a long wait… licorice-flavored Blackjack Gum, a favorite since the 1800s.

Black Jack is an aniseed flavored chewing gum made by Cadbury Adams, originally the American Chicle Company.

Black Jack Gum was sold well into the 1970s, when production ceased due to slow sales. American Chicle was purchased by the Warner-Lambert Company in 1962, which became part of Pfizer in 2000. In 2002, Adams was purchased by the Cadbury Company. Cadbury Adams continues to manufacture Black Jack, as well as other nostalgic brands of chewing gum: Beeman’s, Chiclets, Clove, Sour Apple and Sour Cherry.

Nik-L-Nip is a nostalgic brand of juice confection that comes in a variety of fruit flavors, marketed by Tootsie Roll Industries. The fruit flavored juice is found inside small, bottle-shaped wax container.

Created in the early 20th century, the Nik-L-Nip brand name is a combination of the original cost (Nickel) and preferred wax bottle-opening technique (NIP)

This item is a West Coast favorite dating back to the 1920s, when it was made by the Cardinet Candy Company. The U-No bar is now being made by the Annabelle Candy Company of Hayward, California, who acquired the brand in 1970.

Fizzies Drink Tablets

Once upon a time in the ’50s -’60s there was a popular drink tablet that fizzed when placed in water.  FIZZIES® were invented by the Emerson Drug Company. The idea derived from scientists working with chemical formulas similar to “Bromo Seltzer” and wondering if a fun, fruit flavored drink could be developed the same way.

Fizzies ad from the 60s

“Wouldn’t it be grand if we could drop a tablet in a glass of water and have an instant soda pop?” After long hard work, they finally figured out how to combine the right combinations of fruit flavoring, sweetener, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (a substance that is much like baking soda) into a magical tablet that when dropped into water, turned water into an instant sparkling, effervescent fruit drink!

Fizzies were made in grape, cherry, orange, punch, berry, lemon-lime, and root beer flavors and 8 tablets cost 19 cents. Unfortunately Fizzies contained the sugar substitute cyclamate. In 1968 the FDA banned the use of cyclamates citing research showing that cyclamates caused cancer in laboratory animals and the company went out of business.

They returned in the mid-1990s containing NutriSweet, a substitute 200 times sweeter than sugar.  A new company purchased the formula and reintroduced them to the market in 1995. It was short lived because the company went out of business and all of the inventory was gone by late 2001.

And now, in 2006 Fizzies are available again.  The fun, effervescent drink tablet made popular in the 50’s & 60’s has returned! Whether you’re a genuine kid or simply a kid at heart, now you can enjoy the crisp, refreshing drink that everybody loves to make!

Don’t forget that easter is approaching which means: REESE’S PEANUT BUTTER EGGS! Those are my favorite, untill winter time when they bring out the peanut butter Christmas trees. Make sure you grab some before they are all sold out. I know there are so many other brands of candies that I could of listed. I just wanted to highlight some of the ones that I remember from when I was a kid (not that long ago). I didn’t highlight the big brands ie; M&M’s, tootsie pop etc because we all know of those brands. These are brands that I feel some of us may of forgotten about over the years. Although to pay tribute to the name brands, here is a commercial for Tootsie Roll pops (1950′s)

Passion for Retro in Australia

It’s not something you would expect from a stuffy bank manager, but then Belinda Ford is all about blurring the boundaries.

Belinda and her husband Michael Andrews, who works for Beach Beat and Hayden making surfboards, launched their own on-line clothing company, Retro Au Go Go, in October, 2007, after becoming frustrated at not being able to find the labels that they liked on the Coast.

By clicking on the website, you are transported back in time to the 1950s and ’60s when burlesque pin-up girls with pouting lips, curvy hips and a defiant gleam in their eyes were transforming they way we viewed women.

Belinda points to style icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Betty Paige as inspiration and describes the range, which includes brands such as Poster Pop, Lucky 13 and Kustom Kulture, as all about having a bit of fun.

The best part of retro is that it brings back memories of times when things weren’t so complicated,” she said.

The idea for the business had been brewing for a while, but it wasn’t until early 2007 that the couple decided to take six months off work to focus on getting the business functional.

“We were constantly wanting clothes and all you get up here is Billabong and Quiksilver, which isn’t a criticism … we’re just not those sort of people,” Belinda said.

“So we thought, why can’t we start our own on-line store? Our friends were always encouraging us.

“We thought it would be something fun we could do when we’re retired.”

Some of the range, such as Popster Pop and Lucky 13, Belinda and Michael order from the US, but they also have been steadily collecting old art that has passed its copyright date and then purchase the licensing rights to get them printed on to T-shirts. Their spare time is spent searching through old antique bookstores to find the images, which they can then custom-design.

Aside from the saucy pin-up girls, the range also includes men’s Ts, which reflect Belinda and Michael’s secret fixations.

They share a passion for old cars – Belinda is the proud owner of a ’59 black Chev, and Michael a white ’64 Cadillac – as well as the Wild West, and much of the merchandise available on the site is suggestive of this.

“We’re just idiots! We love all those Wild West images,” Belinda chortled.

“I’d describe it (the range) as hot rod burlesque … I know we should take ourselves seriously, but that’s no fun.”

The name for the business came about after an annual holiday to Stradbroke Island and is a throwback to the old Kings Cross hotspot, Whiskey Au Go Go.

While Belinda and Michael are now back at work, the business continues to evolve, with orders posted on the net being sent out the next day on Belinda’s way to work. It is this customer service that Belinda feels is important for an on-line business.

“People are already nervous because they’re ordering things on-line, so your customer service has to be even more at the forefront,” she said.

The couple recently branched into retro-style housewares as an aside to the fashion, with cowboy shower curtains and band aids and wiggling Hula Girl dashboard figures just part of the collection.

One of the most rewarding aspects for Belinda is to see someone’s reaction to their Ts: “The big kick you get out of it is that nine times out of 10, someone will smile.”

Check out the collection at www.retroaugogo.com.au. T-shirts range in price from $25 to $50.

This just goes to show you that Retro has never really left. It just is coming back full swing. I think that the retro lifestyle and fashion is coming back because it was and is stylishly simple. I spoke to a good buddy of mine the other day and I had no idea that he was into 1950′s retro. I told him about Vividly Vintage, and he mentioned that he is into the 50′s era. I also have come into contact with so many individuals near my age group that appreciate the vintage and retro era’s and styles. Since I was little, I can remember dressing up for multiple Halloween’s back to back as a “greaser”. I always wore my grandfathers “Topper’s – Alameda” jacket. I tried to dress in my own style and I tried multiple things and ideas. Once I started dressing in a retro style, Levi blue jeans with the cuffs rolled up, PF Flyers, hair slicked back, and either a plaid button up shirt or a t-shirt of some kind, I have never felt more comfortable with my “style”. I always like to ask this question “if you could live during any one of the following eras what would it be? Choose yours on the poll below:

WWII Wreckage Discovered

A wreckage has been discovered of a WWII plane that had crashed in the deep heavily forested area. Loggers stumbled upon the wreckage on March 18th 2010. The plane is suggested that it is one from a recorded wreckage from 1948, although is still under investigation. I think that it is awesome that we still find relics and wrecks from times of history such as this. Here is the actual article from KVAL.com one of Oregon’s news stations:

World War II plane wreckage

discovered on Oregon Coast

TILLAMOOK, Ore. – Loggers working in the forest near Rockaway Beach, Ore., stumbled upon a World War II-era U.S. Navy airplane last Thursday, Oregon State Police said.

The loggers called police, who then called the Navy. The first officers on the scene said they believe there may be human remains inside the wreckage.

The plane is a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver.

A small team of Navy investigators was at the crash site Thursday collecting evidence and taking photos. They will send the evidence to a special team at the Joint Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command in Hawaii.

“They have a really big team of people who take that information and cross check it with information they have,” said Sean Hughes, a Navy public affairs officer.

Bomb squad technicians also checked the site and did not find any signs of unexploded ordnance.

The plane was found in a heavily wooded area. Police officers who were on the scene reported seeing a wing, tail section, landing gear and other debris. The wreckage is spread over a 200 yard area.

Hughes said it’s too early to tell where the plane originally came from, however Naval Air Station Tillamook was in use just 20 miles away until it was decommissioned in 1948. Still, Hughes said there were countless flights up and down the coast during the war.

Investigators know the Helldiver was used during World War II, but don’t know exactly when this plane might have crashed. If records from that era of a missing plane near Tillamook still exist, they haven’t been uncovered yet.

Right now, Hughes said the Navy’s first priority is maintaining the integrity of the crash site and getting evidence to the more specialized investigators.

“If there are human remains on board, they are one of our fallen shipmates and they need to be treated with integrity, and so do their families,” he said.

_______________________________

Update from Yahoo News:

Anderson said he has been informed by the U.S. Navy that investigators were close to identifying the airplane.

The investigative work includes going over old Navy records that document plane crashes and missing crew members.

The wreckage was discovered on March 18 by loggers working in the densely wooded area.

Anderson said among the wreckage, spread out over an area of about 200 yards, are a large section of the plane’s tail, sections of a wing and the remains of an engine. Some of the debris melted from the heat of the crash.

He said the plane apparently made a deep impact when it crashed, and some wreckage may still be buried.

A Navy team and law enforcement officials have secured the crash site as the investigation continues.

“If we’ve got a fallen war hero in the hills up there, or more than one, we want to make sure they’re treated with respect and are given back to family,” Anderson said.

It is possible more than one person was in the Helldiver, which carried a pilot and a radio operator-gunner.

This is a video of an SB2C:

This just proves that you can never know what you will find out there in the wilderness. I am sure that some of the most famous missing planes are out there as well.  I hope they find the families of the pilots ( if there are any pilots at the wreckage) and send them to their families. I can only imagine what it feels like to have your child, sibling, uncle/aunt, or relative just “disappear” and never have any closure about their relatives death. If anything develops  further I will post the updates.

COLORS & TEXTURES

Start Designing Your Shade Now!Actual colors may not match website samples exactly. Lighter and darker versions of all colors can be requested. Each dyebath is different so colors will not be exact. Like ceramic tiles, there can be slight variation on orders where multiple dyebaths are used.  This is also why it is a good idea to order pairs of shades on the same order, and not one at a time, to insure a color match.  If you are concerned about the variation, please contact Moon Shine, and we will be happy to discuss what to expect with your specific order.  Custom colors available upon request. Send color samples! We can match them!  OR request color samples from Moon Shine! Patterns and images cannot be applied to textured material.

On shades with multiple tiers we offer up to one color per tier. When ordering a multi-tiered shade with a second color or third color, you need to designate what we refer to on the order form as the Primary, Secondary, and Third tiers. As illustrated in these two examples, the Primary Color is the tier(s) with the largest diameter. The Secondary Color is the tier(s) with the smaller diameter, and the Third Color is the tier(s) with the smallest diameter. Of course, not all of our multi-tiered shades, like the Mimi, would easily follow these guidelines. We provide a comments box on the order form to let you clarify any specifics that you request. We also offer a three-color combination on three tiered shades. Please use the comments box on the order form to indicate your selections. .

Retro Retailer Week (Thursday)

What is a Retro Retailer? A “Retro Retailer” is either an online store or actual store that sells vintage, retro, dated, evocative, in period style, nostalgic, old world, old-fashioned,

out-of-date, passe, or period specific merchandise that is either new, original, or old. If you are looking for retro items to spice up your kitchen, office, or wardrobe, this list will help you in finding the item you are looking for and also few items you can’t live without. These stores are not listed in any particular order. If I have not done a personal review of the business listed below I have not done business with them, so please buy at your own risk. Please let me know if you have any issues with anyone listed. I will take immediate action and delete them off the list. (if you have any stores you want to recommend or if you would like me to look at your business please contact me and let me know. You can email me at Skrach@VividlyVintage.com)

ANNOUNCEMENT: I have a ton of merchants that I have lined up for the Retro Retailer’s List. So many in fact that this week, I will be submitting one for every post this week. Maybe more if I am up to it. It will showcase a lot of really awesome web finds, neat-o products, one of a kind items, and some that you may of even had as a child.

I ran across Vintage Roadside by accident. It was on a blog I stumbled upon. They have a bunch of T-shirts with old prints on them. In the “About us” Section it reads:

The idea for Vintage Roadside came to us during one of our favorite pastimes: driving around central New York looking for the remains of the golden age of automotive travel…and some tasty drive-in French fries.

A & W Papa burger statue - 1960s vintage advertising iconAlthough we were lucky enough to find both that day along historic Route 20—at the Petrified Creatures Museum outside Richfield Springs and the Dairyland Drive-In near Sharon Springs—we couldn’t stop thinking about all the other wonderful mom and pop businesses that used to cater to travelers along that route.

Over the past decade we’ve spent a lot of time exploring old highways and small towns practicing our own version of archaeology—stopping at boarded up businesses to take pictures of old signage, collecting stories from local historical societies, and tracking down mom and pop memorabilia from the 1930s – early 1960s. We’ve also happily paid admission to any roadside attraction we could find with an interesting story to tell…although we have to confess a particular weakness for paper mache dinosaurs and miniature buildings.

On that day in New York we decided that we’d like to try to bring something unique to the mix in keeping the stories of mom and pop businesses alive.

What better way to accomplish this than to bring back to light the authentic advertising graphics and logos of the bygone businesses? In addition to honoring the spirit of the place with the original visions of their owners, it would be fun to give people the opportunity to indulge in one of life’s great pleasures: the gift shop souvenir!

Selecting the best from our extensive collection of memorabilia, each item in our gift shop is designed with the authentic graphics or logo of a business that operated during the 1930s – early 1960s.

Vintage Roadside’s gift shop focuses on roadside attractions, diners and drive-ins, motor courts and motels, skating rinks, and bowling alleys—all places that used to jump with people looking for a bit of fun and adventure, many now pushed out or pushed over by modern roads and a changing society. (We’ve stretched the definition of “roadside” a little to include bowling alleys and skating rinks because we love them too much to leave behind.)

Working with historical societies and the resources that are available to us, we’ve done our best to include a brief history of each business, helping to set it in the context of the American landscape. These histories are a work in progress and will be updated as additional information is uncovered. If you have a story to share, we’d love to hear from you.

Whether you grew up with these businesses or just love the history and the incredible graphics as we do, we hope you enjoy your visit to Vintage Roadside!

Here are a few examples of their T shirts they have for sale on their website:

Tiki Gardens

“Tropical Paradise by Day – Polynesian Fantasy by Night”

One of the most well known and successful attractions along the Florida coast was Tiki Gardens, located in Indian Rocks Beach. Owned and operated by Frank and Jo Byars, Tiki Gardens was a destination for more than 25 years drawing roughly 500,000 visitors annually at its peak.

The Byars began their march to the top of the Florida attraction world with $200.00 and Jo’s ability to craft jewelry from local shells. Building upon Jo’s creative skill and Frank’s natural ability to sell, they soon turned Byars Sea Jewels into the biggest operation of its kind. The next leap forward came when they purchased the contents of a closing gift shop and opened the Signal House gift shop and restaurant on Gulf Blvd. On the grounds of the Signal House property the Byars also built a small Polynesian garden as an added draw for visitors.

In 1962, after a fire destroyed the Signal House the Byars focused their energies on creating one of the most fabulous roadside attractions in Florida’s history. Reopening in 1964, the Byars came back with an even bigger gift shop and expanded gardens. Tiki Gardens would eventually grow to 12 acres and include 10 gift shops, an “adventure trail” of grass huts, numerous statues of Polynesian gods, live peacocks, and Trader Franks, a 450 seat restaurant  which also housed the Wiki Wiki Lounge.

Of the tikis placed throughout the gardens, Mr. Byars explained “we’d always dreamed about the South Seas.” Unable to find an architect who shared their dream of a Polynesian wonderland, Mrs. Byars took pencil and paper in hand to sketch rough blueprints for builders who would ultimately create the attraction’s most memorable landmarks.

In 1988, the Byars sold the remaining property to a pair of foreign investors. One of the interesting aspects of the sale was the $1,000,000 in opals the Byars accepted as partial payment.

After two years of operation, the new owners of Tiki Gardens sold the land to Pinellas County. Following demolition of the existing buildings and sale of the tikis, Pinellas County opened the land to the public in 1995 as a combination park and beach access parking lot. Although no longer attracting visitors with the Byars’ Polynesian dream, Tiki Gardens, now known as Indian Shores Beach Access, continues to offer tourists the opportunity to refresh and enjoy the beauty of Florida’s beaches.

Jet Lanes

Jet Lanes was one of the many bowling “houses” located in the New York City area in the early 1960’s. While not as large or well known as some of the city’s other bowling alleys – Paradise Lanes, Gun Post Lanes, and Central Lanes to name a few - Jet Lanes provided entertainment for bowlers from approximately 1959 – 1965. This was the era of tremendous growth for the sport of bowling  – in 1961 the number of alleys in the United States jumped from 6,500 to over 10,000. Truly a great time to be a bowler!

Located on Third Avenue, Jet Lanes was a simple one-story building featuring 21 lanes with automatic pinspotters – a technological advancement that revolutionized the sport of bowling in 1955 and well worth advertising! Although relatively small, Jet Lanes also featured a restaurant and cocktail lounge and was fully air conditioned for those hot New York summers.

At some point after Jet Lanes closed, the building became the home of Cedardale Drugs for almost 30 years. After Cedardale vacated the building, it sat empty for approximately one year before being torn down in 2006.

The Tower Bowl

If you happened to be in San Diego in 1942, whether as a resident, a vacationer, or a serviceman stationed at one of the local military bases, and were looking for an evening’s activity, you would find the answer downtown at the corner of Broadway and Kettner. There you would find an incredible Art Deco building with a dramatic eighty-foot curved steel tower, adorned with rotating bowling balls five feet in diameter, spelling out “The Tower Bowl” on one side and “Bowling” on the other . In case you somehow missed the sign, the entire building, along with the sign, were adorned with over a thousand feet of brilliant neon.

Tower Bowl, San DiegoTower Bowl was designed for A. J. Hanson by one of the premier architects on the West Coast – S. Charles Lee. Mr. Lee designed many of the beautiful theatres found throughout Southern California. Showplaces such as Tower Theatre in Los Angeles, Fox Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills, Studio Theatre in Hollywood, and what is considered to be the ultimate in Streamline Moderne design – the Academy Theatre in Inglewood. The majority of Mr. Lee’s buildings were opulent palaces and Tower Bowl was no exception.

When it opened in 1941, Tower Bowl was billed as a complete entertainment complex, offering two cocktail lounges, a billiard room, fine food, a dance floor, seating for 400 spectators, and 28 maple lanes. Entering from Broadway, visitors walked across a beautiful terrazzo floor past the cocktail lounge towards the bowling lanes at the rear of the building. Period photographs confirm that the interior of the building was the epitome of Art Deco style. Special lighting effects were employed throughout the building, including a revolving reel that “painted” the lounge in constantly changing colors. The bowling area was much more subdued however, as this was the area for family entertainment. Shades of blue and grey covered the 20 foot tall ceiling along with the walls, which included murals that were an obvious tip of the cap to the architect’s theatre design background.

Tower Bowl proved to be one of the most popular destinations in San Diego throughout the 1940s and 1950s, especially among sailors stationed in San Diego during the war years. A 1986 San Diego Union-Tribune article quotes Wallace “Pug” Lund, a Tower Bowl employee from 1943 to 1948 and a member of the Southern California Bowling Hall of Fame, as saying, “It was THE classic bowling alley of the time. We had lots of good memories from that place – many a fun day, many a fun night. On Saturdays and Sundays, during the war, it would be nothing to have a two-hour waiting list for an alley.”

Although Tower Bowl remained an icon of downtown San Diego until the early 1970’s, business had fallen off significantly with the shift of the population and bowling entertainment to the suburbs and the deteriorating state of the building. After a series of fires, the building was eventually sold and demolished in May 1986 to make way for a 34-story office tower, Tower Bowl lives on through photographs and memories as a tribute to the genius of S. Charles Lee and the heyday of mid-century San Diego.

Indio Bowl

The Indio Bowl was located on North Jackson at the corner of Jackson and Market. With its classic googie style sign and split rock clad exterior, it was the place to bowl throughout the 1960s in Indio.

The following description from a 1965 Chamber of Commerce publication paints a wonderful picture of the Indio Bowl:

“The Indio Bowl, located on North Jackson, is a recreation center for the entire family. Twenty-four Brunswick lanes are at your disposal for your bowling pleasure.

Open 24 hours a day, there is a capable staff on hand to help you enjoy your hours at the bowl.

Special events are scheduled throughout the year. League bowling Monday through Friday. Junior instruction is available year around. For further information about schedules telephone Diamond 7-0624.

The Coffee Shop is opened daily from 4:00 pm until midnight. For your listening and dancing pleasure, the Indio Bowl offers you the Star Room, featuring entertainment every Friday and Saturday night.”

Over the following decades the building was home to several other bowling establishments: Fiesta Lanes, Harvest Lanes, and Desert Lanes. In the past few years the building has shed all traces of its bowling past and became a gift and home accessories store.

Gwinn’s Restaurant

Gwinn’s Restaurant and Drive In: Mid-Century Marvelous

The soaring, angular canopy of Gwinn’s Restaurant and Drive-In is a striking example of the clean lines and bold appeal of mid-century modern design.

Gwinn's Restaurant 1 Mid-Century Modern

Digging through our reference books, we discovered that contemporaries of Bissner & Zook, the architectural team responsible for the design of Gwinn’s, loved it as much as today’s admirers of mid-century style.

Although it includes a few reservations regarding decorative versus functional features, an Architectural Record article published in July 1948 declared Gwinn’s a resounding success.

“To architect and laymen alike the success of the exterior treatment of Gwinn’s will be obvious. The horizontal motif of overlapping roof planes, the finely detailed expanse of glass, and the restrained but effective “billboard” all produce in this restaurant an admirably high standard.”

In addition to being an impressive example of mid-century modern design, Gwinn’s was also a popular meeting place for Pasadena’s civic and business community. The Pasadena Radio Club notes that their first dinner of record was held at Gwinn’s while the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation credits a festive dinner at Gwinn’s (including spiked punch) as their starting point in 1960.

Thanks to a volunteer researcher and Collection Manager at the Pasadena Museum of History, we’re happy to confirm that Pasadena Business Directories list Gwinn’s in operation from 1949 to 1972.

Other interesting Gwinn’s trivia:

  • Floyd Gwinn, the owner of Gwinn’s was the mayor of Pasadena from 1964 – 1966. Following his passing in 1972, Grove Park in Pasadena was dedicated by the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation in his memory.
  • Although existing as a firm for just two years (1947 – 1948), Bissner & Zook also made their mark on residential architecture. A 2007 report prepared by the Historic Resources Group and Pasadena Heritage notes the partners’ impact on the modern ranch: “[their] Judd House of 1948 exemplifies the confluence of “Modern” with the Ranch house in its clean lines and lack of ornamentation combined with the board-and-batten siding of a traditional ranch.”
  • Adventures in Good Eating, a 1959 Duncan Hines publication, noted that Gwinn’s was open from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., featured good lighting and “pleasing colors”, and was known for its fried chicken and homemade fruit pies.

Kibby’s Drive – In

In 1955, you may have decided on the beautiful city of San Francisco for your family vacation. Heading north on Highway 82 you would have found yourself passing through the city of San Mateo. If you were lucky, it was time for a meal and San Mateo had the answer – the Broiled Kibbyburger!

Kibby’s Drive In was a mainstay for both locals and travelers from roughly 1954 – 1971. Located at the corner of 36th and S. El Camino Real (Hwy 82), Kibby’s beckoned hungry diners with their tempting Broiled Kibbyburger and their Famous Pancake Sandwich. Kibby’s also employed the ever-popular carhop – much to the delight of high school kids. Original advertising states that “Kibby” wanted to help at home by way of offering delicious food specialties packaged to pick up and take home. We’re sure this kind offer of assistance was met with cheers and pleas from everyone under the age of 16 within a 20 mile radius!

Chris, with the San Mateo County History Museum, fondly remembers Kibby’s as the place to be in the early 1950s. A place where everyone would hang after local high school football games and dances…at least until 11:00 when the curfew for those under 18 kicked in! “Kibby’s was the best” Chris recalls, “It was a very popular drive-in that was quite similar to what you saw in the movie American Graffiti…and the food really was that good.”

Kibby’s also had a second location on S. El Camino Real, 7 miles south, in Redwood City. This second drive in was open from roughly 1959 – 1968.

B & B Rancho

If you happened to be traveling the western stretch of Route 66 in the 1950s, you would have found yourself passing through Rialto, California. Although this stretch of Route 66, known as Foothill Blvd as it passes through Rialto, Rancho Cucamonga, and Pomona still had a few of its famous orange and lemon groves at the time, the real attraction for the savvy traveler was a night or two at The Wigwam Motel and dinner at The B & B Rancho.

Located at the corner of Foothill and Riverside, just a mile west of The Wigwam Motel, the B & B was in a perfect location to catch the eye of hungry motorists. The B & B was a place where you could take time to relax from the road and slow things down for an hour or two over a great meal.

The B & B was owned and operated by Bob and Betty Lasher who are still remembered fondly for their good food and wonderful service. The location has long since passed through numerous owners and business names.

Thunderbird Lanes

With blazing red eyes and a 17-foot wingspan outlined in neon, Thunderbird Lanes’ sign topped a pylon more than 80 feet high at N. Mountain Ave. and the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) from 1959 – 1997.

Funky wings spread wide, the Thunderbird graphic is a little offbeat – exactly why we love it. We can’t stop staring at it!

While gathering stories from the Ontario community – including one childhood nightmare revolving around the Thunderbird’s red eyes – we also tracked down a Los Angeles Times article from June 1959 announcing construction of Thunderbird Lanes.

Expected to cost $1 million to construct, the article also notes John F. Anderson as the owner of the new 32,000 square foot building with William Wong of Consolidated Developers as project architect.

By all accounts, the sign was magnificent on its pylon, beckoning bowlers to the Thunderbird’s 32 lanes along with a “coffee shop, cocktail lounge, banquet room and children’s nursery.”

Demolished in the late 1990s to make way for a new movie theater, the memory of Thunderbird Lanes lives on through its sign, now housed at the Ontario Museum of History and Art.

On a recent trip to Ontario, we finally realized our dream of visiting the original Thunderbird sign with the wonderful Charles Phoenix as tour guide. Charles was great company as always and the sign was more impressive in person than we imagined.

The Ontario Museum of History and Art is a real gem, well worth a visit next time you’re in the neighborhood.

In addition to the Thunderbird sign, the museum has a fun permanent display focused on road trips.

Come to think of it, the museum’s other permanent display highlighting the history of Ontario, the home of a Hotpoint factory from 1911 – 1975, is just as entertaining.

Moonlight Motel

The Moonlight Motel, located just off of the 71 Bypass in Independence, Missouri beckoned weary travelers with an eye-catching sign featuring a sleepy crescent moon.

The Moonlight offered many of the amenities travelers had come to expect in the late 1950’s: Telephone, Radio, Television, Tub & Shower, Cribs, Room Controlled Heat, and a relatively new technology America was in love with: Refrigerated Air Conditioning. (Experiencing a post-war boom, sales of window air conditioners jumped from 74,500 in 1948 to 1,045,000 in 1953).

The Moonlight Motel was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kemme and served the traveling public until the late 1960’s.

The 71 Bypass is now Highway 291, and while you can no longer stay at the Moonlight, we do know that another motel from that era continues to light up their fantastic sign – The Queen City Motel. While we have not had the opportunity to stay at The Queen City, you might swing by and take a look if you’re passing through and, like us, you’re a fan of fantastic period signage.

Due to the dark denim color and maintaining this vintage denim look, these jeans have not been pre-washed. Therefore, the blue die may rub off slightly on your undergarments. If you choose, you may wash them in cold water and hang dry to reduce the die transfer. To maintain that stiff vintage dark denim look and avoid shrinkage, it is best to have them dry-cleaned.

1920′s Candlestick Phone

The Candlestick phone, also known as the ‘upright’, initially became popular during the early 1900′s before the introduction of the one-piece handset. The first Candlestick phones were introduced when the magneto system was in use, which meant that the phone was connected to a large wooden box called a “subset” containing a battery, bell, and crank. But oh have we come a long way. From its bell-shaped mouthpiece to its cloth-covered receiver cord, this telephone replica recalls a vintage instrument from the 1900′s. But a closer look reveals some modern technology including a decorative dial that functions as a push button for tone/pulse operation as well as a center medallion that serves as a redial button.

New Retro Clothing Web Finds

There are so many great Retro and Vintage items that so many different companies have in their inventories. I am entertaining the thought of opening my own Online store and get a collection of items myself. I am currently investigating if I can do it financially. I would love to have a store front of my own. Maybe someday a custom clothing line too. If you asked me last year if I could see myself designing clothing, I would tell you NO. But I have been expanding my mind, because of one thing, this blog. If you would of asked me a year ago if I thought that I would be interested in writing a blog, I would of laughed at you. I never have thought of myself as a writer, blogger, or anything of that sort. But with the purchase of a .com (www.VividlyVintage.com), 59 posts later, and a positive audience like you, have made me realize that there is more to blogging than just sharing your thoughts with the web. It is the same as writing a column in the news paper, but on MY terms. I have the freedom of what I want to write and how. The only thing that affects my writing is the visitors and what they want to see / read about. Some of you have really made me see things in the retro/vintage area of design, clothing, lifestyle, and decor that I would of never of seen or heard of without you sharing it with me.

I have a huge list of companies that sell retro/vintage merchandise. So many that this coming week (March 22 – 26 2010) I will be doing one Retro Retailer a day, instead of the usual one every couple posts. So please make sure you come by and check that out next week, you will not want to miss it. You can also subscribe to my blog for updates and alerts of new posts by clicking the button on the right side that says “Sign me up!”

The Actors Studio: Kevin Spacey

When you think of Kevin Spacey, you may think of American Beauty, K-Pax, or Beyond the sea. But Kevin actually does impressions, and he is quite good at them. In this video you will see him do a few of them candidly as the host is naming a few off, Kevin is trying to decide who they are in order to get into character. This is a great video. I know it is not technically vintage or retro, but he does impersonate a few actors and actresses from the bygone era. So take a look at the video and I am sure it will make you laugh.

Kevin Spacey played the lead role in the movie “Beyond the sea” where he played the part of the great entertainer Bobby Darin. It is a great movie and Kevin plays the part well. In the movie he also really singing the songs as Darin. So be sure to either rent it, or next time it is on tv, make sure you take the chance to watch it.
